Nguyen Binh Khiem – The principal intellect of Vietnam history

Nguyen Binh Khiem (1491-1585), his childhood name is Nguyen Van Dat, also known as Hanh Phu and Bach Van hermit. He was called by his students as Tuyet Giang Master, one of one of the most influential people of Vietnam history and culture in the 16th century.

He was born in the village of Trung Am, Vinh Lai district, Hai Duong province (now is Ly Hoc ward, Vinh Bao district, Hai Phong city). To adulthood, coming to know that in Lach Trieu village, there was Luong Dac Bang who ranked the second place in court feudal examination, also being popular among scholars at that time, Nguyen Binh Khiem took effort to go a long way to be his student. With his intelligence and hard working, he soon became the best student of Luong Dac Bang. It is the reason why, before passing away, Luong Dac Bang handed over to Nguyen Binh Khiem the precious book collection namely Thai At than kinh as well as asked him to be his son’s guardian.

After winning the first place in the national examination in 1535 and becoming a mandarin under Mac dynasty, he was promoted to be Trinh Tuyen Hau and next Trinh Quoc Cong which are one of the most important position in court. That is the reason why he was also called Trang Trinh.

Nearly two decades from 53 to 73 years of age, although not staying in the capital, Nguyen Binh Khiem still worked for the king, sometimes at the international table, sometimes went into the battle with the King. King Mac considered him as Master. King Mac always consulted him before making any important decision or brought him back to the capital to attend national discussion. Only until he was 73 did he officially retired, back to his hometown living in his hiding place.
