Ga Tan – Chicken simmered with herbs

If you are a fan of chicken then your eating wish-list would never be complete without “Gà Tần” – the Vietnamese chicken simmered with herbs. It is an interesting chicken dish of Vietnam since in certain places, the chicken is stuffed in a soda or coke can.

It takes quite a long time to cook this dish because much time is needed to ensure the quality of the chicken and soup. You will fall in love with this dish by its distinct taste. The soup is a bit bitter but taste amazingly. The chicken absorbed all the ingredients’ flavors is really soft as if it could melt away in your mouth. The best part of chicken used to make this dish is the above leg. The chicken breast comes after but the good taste remains unchanged. There are two kinds of Ga Tan, one is black chicken and the other is normal chicken. The black one is smaller and more expensive because of its higher nutrition.

You can also find another type of Ga Tan, namely “coke can birds” because in some restaurants, people use coke can to cover the birds. In this type, the chicken is replaced by bird as the main ingredient. The recipe is however slightly different.

“Gà Tần” is extremely nutritious and healthy because it is carefully cooked with a variety kind of medical herbs. It is the reason why many Vietnamese women eat this one after giving birth. Vietnamese people often eat Ga Tan when they get sick or in need of a super good food to recover energy for the whole body.

Ga Tan is a perfect choice for you if you’re needing a Vietnamese tonic. You can easily find this dish in many restaurants in Hanoi with reasonable price (around 2 – 2.5 dollar per serving).
